You might not need better teachers; you might just need a better learning designer

Not all teachers are good learning designers. But, to start from the start - who is a learning designer?

A learning designer is someone who can assess the specific learning gap that needs to be bridged in a learner and can design a process or a curriculum for bridging it.

Traditionally this role is expected to be fulfilled by the teacher. But this is a very demanding thing to do not all teachers to play it.

Teachers are people who can at best deliver a particular course to a particular group learners. They might not be able define different strategies for customising the delivery of this course to different learning needs.

This suggests a bigger problem in India's formal and informal education space. Students enrol into colleges & universities expecting to be trained to play professional roles that they desire to perform eventually. But these institutions do not conduct an analysis of what their individual learning needs are. Either they make quick assumptions about the members of a class being similar or they lack the means to perform such an individual analysis for their entire student population.

This gives the learning managers of an institutions a false sense of familiarity with the student body. They feel that they know what the general character of the student body is when actually there is no general character at all! In the educational process, there are very few generalisations and no stereotypes to be banked on. Learning is a very individual pursuit and the only benefit of doing it in groups is the eventual possibility of peer-learning.

Storyflock offers learning design to a range of institutions across India in different forms. By setting up an AiR (artist in residence) program for a corporation or institute or by setting up a mentorship-based curriculum for another. By making the role of the teacher more reasonable and rational, we can create more pragmatic and realistic learning environments.
